Order a nice roll of sausage with sauerkraut crowned by the German beer. Or go for a delicious dessert of apple strudel with vanilla sauce finished beautiful.

A wide selection of homemade cookies and other sweets. The cookies taste great cold nights with a cup of hot chocolate.

Wetzel's Pretzels (west side)

It 'hard to resist a trip to Wetzel's Pretzels. Favorites include pretzel fondue jalapeno peppers and torsion. I also like the original fatwithout salt. Non-pretzel lovers can opt for a scoop of Haagen Daz ice cream.

Keep their ages foremost in mind….

Choose rides and activities that are age appropriate, your toddler will not appreciate the Tower of Terror and your teenagers will want to pluck out their fingernails on It’s a Small World. If you are traveling with children of wide age ranges, then a compromise will be in order. Some options are to split up, do alternate half days or make it clear that if they do this for two hours, will then do that. Find other ways to keep them amused if they are out of their element, younger kids may nap in line ups, older kids might be amused with their Game Boys etc.

Balance out your days…

The younger the children, the less you will be able to pack into one day. Try not to do it all at once. Let you family pick and choose the rides and events they really, really want and focus on those. A day at the parks can be followed by a day at a water park or relaxing by the hotel pool.

Disney tips for young children…

Make sure you plan for plenty of naps and rest times, bring a stroller, choose hotels close to the parks or stay on site so you can get back and forth easily, bring snacks and juice along, go at your child’s pace. Some children will love all the excitement, others may find it too much, so take your cues from your child and go at THEIR pace.

Disney tips for older children…

Give them some breathing room, let them explore on their own if possible, set a time and meeting place if they do go off on their own, bring walkie-talkies or cell phones to stay in touch, don’t force them to do things they don’t want to do, remember it’s a vacation – it’s supposed to be relaxing right?

Try to avoid releasing the beast…

The most important guideline to follow on your Disney vacation, or any family vacation for that matter, is to not let your children get too hungry or too tired. All parents are familiar with the tired, hungry, cranky child. On vacation, when they are probably already out of sorts, pushing them to the limit should be avoided. Keep an eye on meal times and nap times and try to keep them on track. Rest before the kids are exhausted and eat before they are ready to chew their own arms off.

Keep in mind these guidelines and you and your children can enjoy a Disney vacation at any age!

Walt Disney said of Disneyland “It’s something that will never be finished. Something that I can keep developing…and adding to” That philosophy continues in all of the Disney theme parks including and especially Walt Disney World.

Attractions are constantly updated, refurbished, or replaced. It keeps the experience fresh and exciting no matter how many times you’ve been to a Disney theme park.

Disney doesn’t skimp on attractions anymore. For a period of time during Eisner’s rein as CEO it was obvious that corners were being cut in some places. This lead to failures in such attractions as the “Rocket Rods” in Disneyland. For that attraction they simply reused the People Mover track and slapped some high speed sleds on the track and called it good. The problem was it never did work right. The ride was fine. I loved it. But it was always down for maintenance and finally closed.

There is no bigger canvas for the theme park Imagineers to paint on than Walt Disney World. With over 27,000 acres of space there is plenty of room to add new theme parks let alone new attractions. Already the resort has four theme parks, two water parks, and a shopping area.

Each theme park in the Walt Disney World resort has its own schedule of updating, retiring, and adding attractions. The Disney World of yesterday is no longer the Disney World of today.

Some of the past attractions that are now only part of history are: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Skyway to Tomorrow land, Alien Encounter, If You Had Wings and Dreamflight,

Flight to the Moon, and World of Motion.

Fairly recent attractions include Expedition Everest in the Animal Kingdom which is a roller coaster ride like no other and Mission Space in EPCOT. Disney keeps testing and improving in order to bring new things to its guests. Sometimes they spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a concept that is not proven. Mission Space is one of those “best guess” efforts that produced a very expensive but mediocre ride.

They don’t always get it right, but when they do, it’s magic. The new Soarin in EPCOT is a winner. It’s a ride first found as “Soarin over California” in Disney’s California Adventure theme park next to Disneyland. The guests sit suspended in front of an IMAX type screen while soaring over various scenes and landscapes of California. The feeling is so real that you’d swear your going to get your feet wet as you skim over the water.

What can you look forward to in the future? Who knows. There are rumors that Spaceship Earth in EPCOT will be redone by Siemans. More rumors hint that DisneyQuest, a large gaming area for kids and adults, will close. Perhaps in the future Disney will choose to copy the Indian Jones ride from Disneyland and bring it to Florida.

Whenever you travel to Disney World, be assured there will be something new for you to enjoy and perhaps some old things for you to reminisce about.

Successfully executing a Disney vacation is like driving in New York during rush hour, it needs to be well-planned and you have to compromise. Being a Disney veteran, I have scoured the internet and bought numerous books on achieving fantastic vacations in Walt Disney World. There are so many factors to consider: mode of transportation to and from the world, transportation within the world, accommodations, tickets, dining options, special events taking place, when to travel, attractions outside of disney, etc. etc.

Mode of transportation to and from Disney is generally the easiest question to answer. The distance to drive to Disney may or may not be feasible. Considerations include how long you have to travel – do you only have a week? Or are you retired and have some extra time? Do you have children? What are their ages? Is it feasible to put them in the car for the amount of time that it will take to get to Disney and back? Maybe a train would be a good idea for part of the trip? Air travel is a great way to go if you live fairly far away or do not have a lot of time to spend on the road.

Transportation within the world is another consideration. When staying on-site, Disney charges a fee to it’s hotel guests for vehicles. Depending on which resort you are staying at, you may be able to get by with using Disney transportation only. If you are not staying in a Disney hotel it is almost always recommended that you have a vehicle at your disposal.

The number of accommodation possibilities at Disney is daunting. From Value to Moderate to Deluxe to Home away from Home to the campground there are many options available depending on your travel parties make-up. You may want to do a combination of any two or stay off-site for a few days to enjoy the other attractions in Orlando. Depending on the size of your traveling party will have an effect on the resort you choose. Some hotel rooms only have room for 4 (plus 1 in crib) – values, whereas others can sleep up to 12 (3-bedroom at a Home away from Home resort). Concierge service is available at many of the resorts as well for an additional fee. Pools also differ at all of the hotels, some have the basics, others are a mini-water park unto themselves.

Tickets at Disney can be expensive, especially when you purchase options that you will never use. Getting the right tickets is not a daunting process, but it is very important to plan accordingly so you use the tickets to the fullest extent possible. Disney dining is a dining option available to all guests staying on a resort property within the world. Whether to purchase this plan is determined by your itinerary and how structured you want your vacation to be.

When to travel to Disney is an extremely important decision to make. It will affect the level of people in the parks, line-waiting times, weather and special events. Going at a busier time of the year takes extra planning and structure in order to have a wonderful vacation. When the weather is extremely hot (think 100 in August at times), planned periods of rest need to be considered. Special events like the “Pirate and Princess Party”, the “Food and Wine Festival” and many more take place throughout the year. I am especially fond of the “Flower and Garden Festival” at Epcot.
